This is a prompt that underlines a transformed outlook when associating with Mentally Disabled Individuals in an Article βUs is Themβ: Working with the Psychiatrically Labelled by David Prichard, Ph. D
Mental illness is a controversial matter in most societies owing to different views regarding the diverse conditions. This article exposes us to different incidents of individuals having a schizophrenic diagnosis with the aim of humanizing the experience. Individuals tend to treat mentally ill patients in a manner that feels like a test. Just because one is psychiatrically labeled does not mean that they should be treated differently; they are also people. This article was an eye-opener for me as I am among the many who view psychiatrically labeled patients differently. This article is proof that indeed mentally ill individuals have more to their story than imbalanced emotions.
From what I have learned, I agree that the care of mentally ill patients goes beyond managing their illnesses and understanding its impacts on their lives; also vital to this care is establishing creative ways to help these individualsβ live creative and meaningful lives (Prichard, 2005). My perception of mentally ill patients has also changed. Psychiatric labels should not influence how one interacts with mentally ill patients (Prichard, 2005). It is wrong to unconditionally pathologize suicide as a cause of death among psychiatric patients as it is always not an assessment based on the context of the individual.
